My Winning Essay

What should India do to win 20 gold medals in the 2016 Olympics?

Olympics! The name which everyone wants to be associated with since its inception in 1896. Olympics in all its forms; may be summer Olympics or winter Olympics or Para Olympics has always been the highest podium and honor in the filed of sports and athletics. This event which started as a mere meet in the country of Greece, slowly clutched the entire world under its essence. And now guess what? It's the most sought after event in the world today.

Being Indian, we always dream of India winning medal tallies in each and every event. But to be frank dreams don't come true only by aspirations. India's performance has never been satisfactory, as others expect our country to be like Japan, Korea, Taiwan who were mere spectators earlier have now become the strong heart of Olympics.

If we look at the present scenario, we can very well tell that India is developing. But is this development that significant that it will make India win medals. The last time India won an Olympic gold medal was in 1980. In the past we see, Indians have done well in hockey, wrestling and shooting but why do they lag so far behind in other sports. Is it a question of stamina? Is it due to poor training facilities or is the climate a major factor! Should Indian government invest more in their sports team? YES... All this can be solved. It's all a question of economics. If sportspersons, if youngsters and their parents know that excelling in sport will mean big money and if companies know sponsoring sports and athletes will pay dividends there will be no lack of champions from India. Lack of resources, training facilities and a high risk of failure are all key factors. To succeed in sports at the highest level requires extensive scouting of young talent, grooming over the years for the talent to mature and finally state or corporate sponsorship. In India we do not see or hear about sports played at state university level, whereas in sport loving countries like US you see them competing on TV. It is corruption and discrimination. Consider the case of India for dropping its most reputed weightlifter Kunjarani simply on racial grounds.
So, if all these come true and the government as well as we the people join our hands and commit ourselves to putting in efforts, then the day is not far when not 20 but 200 will be the medal tally of India.

John Banal once said :

“He slept beneath the moon He basked beneath the sunHe lived a life of going to doBut died with doing none.”And this is what the present story of Indian sportsperson is. But they are trying everything to leave no stone unturned. Remember life has very little to take and everything to give. So why not avail this to our fullest because, “Life may be as hard and as tough as bamboo, but it has got its own delicacy and fragrance like a flute”

I am a table tennis player and I play for my state. It takes a lot from a player to be in the top in a state then imagine what will be the case and what amount of efforts, the Olympic gold medalists put in order to clinch the title! It's absolutely stunning! With the same note and keeping my fingers crossed that the day will come when India will be envied by other countries for its performance in Olympics, and if the Almighty wishes, then “I” may be the glittering star because we will surely be successful as I believe, “Success doesn't mean the absence of failures; It means attainment of ultimate objectives. It means winning the war, not every battle.”

And our aim is the Olympic podium.
